It is
estimated that over one million laser vision correction procedures
will be performed in the United States in 2001. Individuals who suffer
from myopia (nearsightedness) with or without astigmatism or hyperopia
(farsightedness) with or without astigmatism will choose laser vision
correction as an alternative to contact lenses or eyeglasses.
LASIK
is an acronym for Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, literally
meaning "to reshape the cornea within using a laser". An
excimer laser removes tissue beneath a thin flap formed with an instrument
known as a microkeratome. The microkeratome makes a thin flap in the
top third of the cornea, creating a "corneal cap". The laser
is then used to remove a thin layer of tissue from the cornea under
the flap. The cap is then returned to its natural position, creating
a healthy surface within 24 hours. This re-shaping of the cornea helps
the eye focus properly, thus reducing or eliminating the need for
contact lenses or eyeglasses. As a result, with LASIK there is less
area to heal, less risk of scarring, less risk of corneal haze, less
postoperative pain, less postoperative medications, and vision is
often improved more rapidly.
